Downsizing is easier when the order is right. Before furniture is donated, boxes are hauled away, or a cleanout begins, let us look at what is actually in the home. Some belongings belong in an estate sale. Some may fit an auction or individual listing. Some should be donated, and some simply need to be cleared. We help you sort those paths before value disappears.

What to do first
Pause the clearing. Make a simple record of the home.
Protect personal papers and sentimental items
Set aside financial records, photographs, family keepsakes, medication, and anything you already know should stay with the family.
Leave saleable contents in place
Furniture, collections, household goods, tools, and décor are easier to understand in the rooms where they have been kept.
Photograph each space
Take a few clear, wide photos of every room, plus the garage, shed, closets, and other storage areas.
Note the timing
Write down the move date, closing date, travel constraints, or other deadline. The timeline helps determine which paths are practical.
Before the review
What not to do
Do not make the house look empty before it is reviewed.
Do not empty drawers or closets just to get ahead. Useful groupings, small items, and parts of collections can be separated or discarded in the process.
Do not donate furniture or collections before a review. A decision that makes sense for one item may not make sense for the household as a whole.
